I look at him and open my mouth to explain and he interrupts saying that the last time he was there, he left after pumping and after he got home the cops showed up and asked him to return to pay for his gas.

It was then that I recognized him. I was the one what called the cops on his aged ass.

He got angry that we hadn’t processed the card he never swiped, then he told me if it happens again he’s going to sue.

In summation, my understanding is that he’d sue us because we allowed him to pump his fuel without prepaying.

And that’s what instigated the termination of her employment. When she showed up at work the next day the manager told her to go home. Oy, this actually happened to me. I had 3 people in a row ask where are pay phones are. 3! And they weren’t separated by 5 minutes either, back to back. All in line at the same time. Between the first and the third, there was maybe 10 feet.

The worst part of this comic was figuring out and setting up the word play. The dialogue alone took me 3 days of writing deleting and writing again. So glad that’s done.

It seems the oddest thing to me. Every day I work, I run into multiple customers that feel they need to know what pump they’re on before they begin fueling. Now, the layout of our pumps is off from what seems to be the standard, as such I’ve gotten used to people telling me the wrong pump number. Everything from a little off to blatantly absurd.

“I’m on number 31.”

“Sir, we have 4 islands, 8 stations, and 16 pump nozzles. How do you figure you’re on 31?”

I’ve reached the point where I don’t even listen to people when they tell me what number they’re on. If I’m not already certain what car is theirs, I’ll ask, otherwise, it doesn’t matter. In the end I figure it’s part of my job to know where customers are and what they want without them telling me. God knows enough spanish-only-speaking individuals come in to where I kinda have to.

But why then do they have to know the pump number?
